What Classifies a Car As an Antique?

Whether or not your car is considered an antique depends on who you're asking and what state you live in. On the average though, for a car to be considered an antique, it must be at least 25 years old and no longer be used as a daily driver.

New York State's Definition of an Antique Vehicle

In New York State, antique vehicles are defined as motor vehicles manufactured more than 25 years before the current calendar year that are used only as collectors' items or exhibition pieces and not for the general transportation of persons or property.

Antique vehicles in New York State are eligible for special license plates that exempt them from certain registration fees and inspections. To qualify for antique vehicle plates, the vehicle must be at least 26 years old and must be owned solely as a collector's item.
