Angel Hernández Retires as MLB Umpire
A Controversial Career Ends
Hernández was never considered MLB's worst umpire according to MLB's statistical studies and reports, but in the end, his controversial career has come to an end.
Angel Hernández, who has been criticized by players, managers, and fans alike, announced his retirement effective May 9, 2023. Hernández, who worked from 1991 to 2023, finished the regular season as the lowest-rated umpire with a minimum of 10 games.
Hernández was no stranger to controversy. In 2017, he was involved in a highly publicized dispute with then-Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who accused him of making biased calls. Hernández filed a defamation lawsuit against Roberts, which was later dismissed.
Despite the criticism, Hernández maintained that he was a good umpire. In a 2019 interview, he said, "I'm not going to let anybody tell me I'm not a good umpire. I'm one of the best umpires in the game."
Hernández's retirement marks the end of an era in Major League Baseball. He was one of the most recognizable and controversial umpires in the game, and his absence will be felt.
