Germany: Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) Member Under Fire

Krah Accused of Financial Misdeeds

By [Author Name] | [Date]

The leadership of the German far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party has suspended Maximilian Krah, a member of the European Parliament, following allegations of financial impropriety. The party's spokesperson, Tino Chrupalla, announced the suspension on Monday, stating that Krah would be removed from his leadership position in the AfD parliamentary group during the ongoing investigations.

The allegations against Krah stem from claims made by a German entrepreneur named Philip Craemer, who has accused Krah of accepting more than €100,000 in donations from a Czech property developer and failing to declare the funds to the authorities. Krah has denied the allegations, calling them "absurd" and "politically motivated."

The suspension of Krah has sparked a political crisis within the AfD, which has been plagued by internal divisions in recent months. Krah is the second senior party member to be suspended in the space of a few weeks, following the resignation of Andre Poggenburg as the party's national treasurer amidst allegations of embezzlement.

The allegations against Krah and Poggenburg have cast a shadow over the AfD, which has been facing increasing scrutiny from German authorities and public backlash over its alleged ties to far-right extremist groups. The party's approval ratings have declined sharply in recent months, and it is unclear whether the AfD will be able to recover from the current crisis.
